How To Layer Your Skincare

Skincare layering may feel like the hottest girl on the block, but this technique stems from the K-Beauty scene in the 1990s. These K-Beauty routines could include up to 17 products in a single application session.

Not to worry, thanks to the introduction of multifunctional products like our Exfoliant & Mask, we’re not about to outline a skincare routine that requires an hour to complete.

What is skincare layering?

Skincare layering is the order you apply your skincare products, from cleansing to your repair treatments. The general rule of thumb is to use the product with the smallest molecular structure first. This is because the smallest molecular products tend to be lightweight, enabling them to penetrate deeper into the skin more easily.

Why is layering your skincare important?

It’s important to layer your skincare from lightest to heaviest as this allows your products to be readily absorbed. If you’ve ever poured water into a cup with oil, you’ll see the oil floats on the surface. The same happens with your skincare when applied incorrectly.

If you apply your treatment product after your moisturiser, you’ve created a barrier to absorption as the smaller molecular structure of your treatment serums cannot penetrate through a heavier moisturiser. Thus, losing their effectiveness.

Cleansers

Double-cleanse with the Cream Cleanser for those with a dry, dehydrated or dry-combination skin type. For those with a normal, oily-combination, oily or acne-prone skin type, double-cleanse with the Gel Cleanser.

Exfoliate & Mask

Twice a week, follow your cleansing regimen with an Exfoliant & Mask. It removes deeply ingrained dirt and dead skin cells while protecting against environmental damage and tightening the pores. This creates the ideal environment for your treatment products to penetrate deeper into the skin where your active botanicals can work their magic.

Repair Treatments

Experiencing breakouts, apply a small amount of Blemish Gel morning and night directly onto the spot or blemish. This gel targets bacteria that cause inflammation without over-drying skin. Only use your Blemish Gel during a breakout and pop it to the side on those glorious clear skin days.

Looking to target skin pigmentation and jump-start the formation of collagen? Now is when you apply your Vitamin C+ Serum. Its ability to protect against the ageing effects of the environment makes our Vitamin C+ Serum your perfect morning treatment partner.

Restore lost hydration at night with our Vital+ Glow Serum. Loaded with skin-nourishing vitamins and essential fatty acids, this oil-based serum will keep cell walls strong while leaving your skin feeling firmer and visibly hydrated. If your skin type is normal, combination, oily or acne-prone, you may want to use this serum at night instead of your moisturiser. Alternatively, those with dry, dehydrated or dry-combination skin types benefit from applying the Replenishing Cream after this serum to ramp up your skin’s hydration.

Moisturiser

Before applying sunscreen, the final step is to lock in hydration with your moisturiser. For those with a dry, dehydrated or dry-combination skin type, choose the Replenishing Cream. If you experience a normal, oily-combination, oily or acne-prone skin type, choose the Hydrating Lotion. Use Replenishing Cream as a night cream for normal to combination skin types.

For the best results, we recommend waiting 30 - 60 seconds between the application of each product. This allows your product time to be absorbed past the outlet layer of the skin before you lather on your next treatment.

If layering feels too much, start with a three-step cleansing, exfoliate and moisturiser routine. Once that feels comfortable, you can include a treatment serum to target a specific skin concern. Have fun with your skincare routine.
