It's Time To End This Toxic Relationship

If you’ve read anything online, you’re probably under the impression that making the switch to natural hair care is daunting. We’re here to tell you, it’s really not.

However, there are a few things you might want to know before taking the plunge to a happier head of hair!

Get ready for a new shower experience

Contrary to popular belief, the bubble factor of a product is not an accurate indicator of cleanliness.

Shampoo lather is simply a chemical reaction caused by surfactants (surface active agents); the two main types used in shampoos are sodium lauryl sulphate and sodium laureth sulphate. When these compounds are mixed with water, it creates a chemical reaction that causes the Shampoo to lather.

Sodium lauryl sulphate and sodium laureth sulphate are capable of over-drying your hair and irritating your skin.

Washing without lather will be weird at first, but just remember, bubbles are not your friend.

Ending the toxic relationship

Allowing the hair to eliminate toxins tends to be the biggest challenge when switching to natural. Trust us, we’ve been there!

Unless you’ve tested out the wonderful world of natural before, you’ve likely washed your hair the same way your whole life, with supermarket or salon silicones. Yep, just because you paid $79.99 for a bottle of Shampoo from your favourite hair salon doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good for you.

With this in mind, it’s important to understand that your hair will need time to transition. It can take a few weeks for your hair to adjust when making the switch. During this period, your hair may feel heavier, oilier and possibly even itchy. But don’t be alarmed (or worse, reach for the chemicals) as this is totally normal. It’s a detox, are they ever comfortable?

After a few washes, your scalp will adjust, and your hair will likely look healthy, shiny and feel more balanced from root to tip. Think of it as an unhealthy relationship; leaving might be hard, but once you stick it out, you’ll never look back. Good things take time!

All of this for what?

The majority of us never have or never will see our bare scalp, so it’s easy to neglect the health of our skin in this area. However, the skin on the scalp is incredibly sensitive to the products we use. In fact, the chemical absorption rate on your forehead and scalp is about four times greater than the absorption rate on your forearms!

Natural hair care goes beyond shiny-looking locks. It also addresses issues such as scalp health, like helping to relieve scalp psoriasis and dandruff.

Better scalp health can result in hair follicles starting to repair from the inside out. When your hair follicles become healthier, and you no longer have product build-up (from silicones), your hair will look lush, shiny and may even feel thicker as the scalp produces new hair strands.

Last but certainly not least, the ingredients found in natural hair care are better for our environment as they eliminate harsh chemicals from entering our water systems, oceans or causing long-term damage to our ecosystems.

Marketing hype does an excellent job of tricking us into believing that nasties are the new normal for hair and skincare products.
