World Environment Day is always a good reminder that looking after the planet doesn't mean you have to overhaul your entire life overnight.
Honestly, it's usually just the little things.
-
Remembering your reusable coffee cup (even when you're running late).
-
Grabbing your water bottle on the way out the door.
-
Picking up that random piece of plastic you spot on the bush.
-
Actually taking two seconds to separate your recycling instead of just tossing it all in the main bin.
They're super small habits, but they really do add up.
At Byron Bay Skincare, we're incredibly lucky to live and work in one of the most beautiful spots in Australia. The beaches, the bush, the wildlife, those long coastal walks… It's literally our backyard.
And when you spend that much time outdoors, you realise pretty quickly that nature isn't some far-away concept. It's where we spend our weekends. It's where we catch up with friends. It's where we head for a quick dip after work to wash the day off.
We're definitely not perfect, but we're always looking for easy ways to tread a little lighter and make better choices as a team.

Let’s Talk About Bins (Unsexy, But Necessary) ♻️
Alright, let's kick things off with arguably the least glamorous topic on the planet: our office bins.
Look, we know rubbish sorting isn't exactly the most thrilling conversation starter, but it's honestly a massive vibe shift when you get it right. One thing we've worked super hard on behind the scenes is making sure recycling is actually easy and accessible around the office, rather than a total headache.
We've set up dedicated spots for absolutely everything. Cardboard, paper, bottles, containers, and yes, even those pesky soft plastics, they've all got their own little home.
It sounds so basic, but we've realised that when recycling is actually convenient (and not a massive chore), the whole team gets on board. No one wants to stand there playing guessing games with a wrapper when they're bursting for a morning coffee.
Before you know it, it just becomes a completely mindless part of the daily routine. You don't even have to think about it anymore.
Coffee. Emails. Recycling. Post-work dip. Repeat.

Less Food Waste, More Thoughtful Habits (RIP to the Forgotten Avocados) 🥑
If you've ever braved a look inside an office kitchen bin right after the lunchtime rush, you already know how quickly food waste piles up. It's wild how much ends up in landfill just from a team grazing throughout the day.
We're talking about:
-
The mountain of fruit peels and apple cores from healthy morning snacks.
-
An endless supply of coffee grounds (because let's be real, we run on caffeine).
-
The half-eaten lunch leftovers that didn't quite make the cut.
-
And, tragically, the occasional avocado that got forgotten at the back of the fridge and crossed over into the point of no return. Devastating, honestly.
Because we hate seeing good stuff go to waste, we've completely changed how we handle our kitchen scraps. We separate all our organic waste super carefully and use compostable bags for food scraps wherever we can.
It's such a simple pivot, but it's honestly been a massive eye-opener for the whole team. It's helped us become way more aware of the sheer volume of waste we create just by going about our day. Turns out, when you actually pay attention and have the right setup in place, cutting down your footprint is so much easier than it seems. It just takes a little bit of mindfulness before you toss that banana peel.
Over to you... 🤝
We're all in this together, so we want to know: how do you keep your food waste in check at home or at work? Are you a composting pro, or do you have a secret recipe for using up those sad-looking veggies at the end of the week?
Drop your best tips in the comments below or share them with us on Insta; we'd love to steal your ideas for the Byron Bay Skincare kitchen!

Reusing What We Already Have (The Ultimate Flex) 📦
There's honestly nothing more satisfying than giving something a second life. It's like a little win for the day.
Now, full disclosure: we love a beautiful, crisp unboxing experience as much as anyone, so we would never ship a customer order in a beaten-up, pre-loved box. Your orders will always arrive looking perfect. But behind the scenes in our warehouse? That’s where the real reuse happens.
Think about it:
-
A sturdy cardboard box that gets reused internally instead of heading straight to the recycling bin.
-
Packaging materials that get saved and used again when sending products to remote team members or UGC creators.
-
Storage containers that stick around in our warehouse for years, not just months.
We always try to reuse things internally before we even think about buying replacements. We don't do it because it's a trendy aesthetic or looks good on the grid; we do it because it's a practical behaviour that just makes total sense.
At the end of the day, the absolute most sustainable option out there isn't buying something brand new with a green label on it; it's simply optimising what we've already got in front of us.
Whether that's us repurposing delivery boxes in-house or you giving an old skincare jar a second life as a favourite new plant propagator on your windowsill, those tiny habits are where the real magic happens.

Beach Walks Are Better When You Leave With More Than You Brought 🌊
One thing that happens when you're lucky enough to live right on the coast is that you become hyper-aware of your surroundings. Because we're so close to nature out here in Byron, we see everything firsthand—the good, the beautiful, and the stuff that shouldn't be there.
When you're walking along the shoreline, it's hard not to notice:
-
That random plastic bottle cap half-buried in the sand.
-
A stray wrapper caught in the dunes.
-
The ghost fishing line tangled around the rocks.
We honestly have some of the most stunning beaches in the world, and we're so incredibly lucky to call this place our backyard. But once you start noticing the plastic, it's impossible to unsee it. It makes you realise how fragile these places really are and how much they need us to look after them.
That's why so many of our team members have made it a rule to collect bits of rubbish during our beach walks and weekend adventures. There's no organised campaign or big announcement. It's just a simple, everyday habit because we love this place.
It's the exact same vibe as when you're out for a morning stroll, spot a bit of plastic, and instinctively pop it in your pocket. If all of us picked up just two or three pieces of rubbish every time we headed down to the water for a dip, imagine the massive difference that would make over a year.

The Little Swaps Add Up (Zero Guilt, All Progress) 🌱
One of our absolute favourite things about sustainability is that it doesn't have to be all-or-nothing.
You don't need to live completely off-grid. You don't need to be 100% perfect. And you definitely don't need a cupboard overflowing with aesthetically pleasing mason jars or a fully functioning worm farm in your backyard to make a difference.
Honestly, sometimes it's just as simple as:
-
Remembering your own water bottle before you leave the house.
-
Keeping a reusable coffee cup (Plus, reusable cups are a whole aesthetic now. There are literally thousands of cute colours and designs out there, so you can basically match your cup to your vibe).
-
Choosing skincare and products you actually genuinely love and will use until the very last drop.
-
Taking two seconds to recycle properly.
-
Saying "no thanks" to random plastic promo stuff you know you don't need.
They're just small, low-effort swaps. Way less pressure, way more actual progress.
When we stop stressing about doing everything perfectly and just focus on making those easy, everyday changes, it all adds up. It's just about doing what we can, where we can—and that's more than enough.
What’s Next? ☀️
The truth is, sustainability isn't some final destination you suddenly arrive at. It's just something you keep working on, bit by bit.
There are always going to be new things to learn, better choices to make, and heaps of room to grow. As a team, we're constantly bouncing ideas off each other, swapping lifestyle tips, and looking for practical, real-world ways to reduce our impact.
Some ideas totally stick. Some don't quite work out. But at the end of the day, every single small improvement is still a win.
Planting Big Ideas 🌳
Speaking of steps in the right direction, we're SO stoked to be teaming up with One Tree Planted. To make your skincare routine go even further, we're planting one tree for every single bottle of Byron Bay Skincare you buy. It's our way of making sure that while you're looking after your skin, we're all giving a little love back to the planet together.
